Basil Rajapaksa's parliamentary status is invalid - Monk who sought court

Basil Rajapaksa was sworn in as a Member of Parliament through the National List of the Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna on August 8.

In many place's comments were that his appointment was invalid at the time he was sworn in. But now three people, including Ulappane Sumangala Thera, have filed a petition in the Court of Appeal seeking an injunction against the appointment of Basil Rajapaksa as a Member of Parliament.

The petition names Finance Minister Basil Rohana Rajapaksa, Parliamentary Secretary General and the Attorney General as defendants.

It further stated that it was against the law of the land for a person with dual citizenship to be sworn in as a Member of Parliament.

Currently, there are ongoing protests against the government and those in government. In this context, it is noteworthy that this issue shows the distrust of the people at the top of the government.
